Reading Habits Book Tag

Hello everyone! I figured for my first proper post, I’d do a book tag. These look like great fun and seem like an easy way to get to know me better.

1. Do you have a certain place at home for reading?

I used to only read in bed, but I’ve got to be honest – it caused me to nap a lot because my bed’s so comfy! My new go-to is my living room, I still get all snug in my dressing gown (I basically live in it when I’m at home) but I feel like I get more reading done now.

2. Bookmark or random piece of paper?

Bookmark! My favourite one is all the way from Singapore, a lovely friend of mine posted it to me quite a while ago and I love it. I also recently got two new ones – one from the Like A Woman pop up shop (which was put together for International Womens Day by Penguin Books) and one from Housmans bookshop (which is a wonderful shop in Kings Cross, London!)

3. Can you just stop reading or do you have to stop after a chapter/ a certain amount of pages?

If I’m not in a rush, I’ll stop at the end of a chapter. I always have a goal of reading at least a few chapters (depending on their length) in one go before I can take a break, and this really works for me. Most of the time this results in me not wanting to put the book down. If I’m in a rush however I read as many pages as I possibly can, though when I stop mid chapter I usually have to go back a few pages to remind myself of what’s going on.

4. Do you eat or drink while reading?

I don’t think I’ve ever done this successfully, I couldn’t focus very well on the times that I’ve tried to. I’ll have a drink nearby though.

5. Multitasking: Music or TV while reading?

Nope! I like to read in quiet. Sometimes I can read a little bit if someone is watching  tv and it isn’t on too loud but again, I can’t focus very well!

6. One book at a time or several at once?

One at a time! I need to give all my attention to it. This occasionally tests my willpower though like when I’m reading a book that I picked up at random, while a book I’m really looking forward to reading is staring at me. I may pick that book up and restrict myself to only reading a few pages of it. *cough* The Exact Opposite of Okay by Laura Steven – this is about you, I am coming for you as soon as possible!

7. Reading at home or everywhere?

Everywhere! Except on coaches, because coaches make me feel ill. This question has made me realise how little I read outdoors though. I definitely have prefered places to read. When I’m not at home you will find me at a library, or reading before my shift at work begins.

8. Reading out loud or silently in your head?

Silently. When I read out loud to others if there’s a really good sentence/paragraph I want to talk about, my anxiety causes all the words to get jumbled up.

9. Do you read ahead or even skip pages?

Not unless the book is so dull that I need to find a reason to keep going. I’ve only page skipped a few times when the book was unbearable.

10. Breaking the spine or keeping it like new?

Hehehe. I’m a spine breaker. Sometimes because it’s otherwise too hard to read the book, but most of the time just because it’s SO SATISFYING. If the cover is really stunning though I will do my best not to, though I’m not sure how that logic works.

11. Do you write in your books?

No! If I want to remember a certain part I’ll screenshot it or take a photo. I do this a lot.

12. When do you find yourself reading? Morning, afternoon, evening, whenever you get the chance or all the time?

I think I’m most productive with reading in the afternoon. When I have the motivation I will try to read whenever I can but it always ends up being afternoon that I read the most.

13. What is your best setting to read in?

Somewhere quiet and cosy. I’m not picky.

14. What do you do first – Read or Watch?

This depends. I watched The Hunger Games which lead me to buying and reading all of the books before the 2nd film was released. I watched It, then years later read the book (wow, what a chunky book) before the new film was released. I read Wonder before watching the film. I want to watch Love, Simon but I don’t even have a copy of Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda so I’ll probably end up watching it first. I’m not too fussed to be honest. I appreciate both the film and book for what they are, and I don’t always favour the book.

15. What format do you prefer? Audiobook, E-book or physical book?

Me and audiobooks don’t get along. I don’t  follow along with the story very easily when listening to it. I love E-books because they don’t take up much room (duh!) which is good for my minimalist self. I can choose the font sizing, and they’re cheaper. These are the first reasons that spring to mind! However if I don’t read a physical book in a while I will miss them, and there’s no beating a physical books pretty cover. This is a tough question that I’m never able to actually answer!

16. Do you have a unique habit when you read?

Not that I can think of? Maybe the whole “read X amount of chapters before putting book down” thing I have going on? But for all I know that could be a super common thing readers do!

17. Do book series have to match?

They don’t have to but it’s very satisfying when they do.

I hope you all enjoyed reading this! Have a great day 🙂
